What is Imposter?

Imposter is a free social deduction word game you play in person with one phone. Everyone sits in a circle. Each player secretly looks at their word, then the group discusses clues and tries to figure out who got the wrong word. It's fast, funny, and works anywhere. No accounts, no downloads, no setup time.

How to Play the Imposter Word Game

A full round takes about 5 minutes. Here's the flow:

  1. Enter names. Type in everyone who's playing, 3 to 20 people.
  2. Pick a category. Food, movies, animals, brands. Lots of word sets to choose from. You can also pick your own custom words.
  3. Pass the phone. Each player taps to reveal their word privately, then passes it face-down to the next person. Civilians all see the same word. The Imposter sees a similar but different one.
  4. Discuss and vote. Everyone gives a clue or describes their word without saying it directly. After the discussion, vote on who you think the Imposter is. If the civilians catch them, civilians win. If the Imposter survives the vote, the Imposter wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players do you need for Imposter?

3 to 20 players. The sweet spot is 5 to 10. With fewer than 5 the Imposter gets caught too easily. With more than 10 the discussion gets chaotic and quiet players get drowned out. If you have a big group, try splitting into two separate rounds.

What is the Imposter word game?

Imposter is a social deduction word game you play with friends in person. Everyone secretly looks at a word on a shared phone. Most players get the real word. One player, the Imposter, gets a different but similar word. Through careful clues and discussion, the group tries to figure out who the Imposter is before the vote. It's free, needs no app, and works on any phone.

Is Imposter free to play?

Yes, completely free. No download, no account, no payment. You don't even need to sign up. The site is supported by ads, which is how it stays free for everyone. Just open playimposter.xyz on any browser and you're ready to go.

Can you play Imposter on mobile?

Yes. The site is built for phones first. It works on any modern browser. iOS Safari, Android Chrome, whatever you've got. No app to download, no updates to wait for. It also works fine on tablets and desktops if you prefer a bigger screen for the host.

What is the word pairs mechanic?

In Imposter mode, civilians all get the same word (for example, "Dog") and the Imposter gets a closely related but different word (for example, "Wolf"). This is what makes the game interesting. The Imposter isn't guessing blindly. They have a starting point. But they don't know the exact word everyone else shares. This creates tense, funny rounds where clues almost match but something feels slightly off. In Classic mode, the Imposter gets nothing at all, which is a harder mode for experienced groups.

Hosting tips for better rounds

Hosting is easy but a few small things make the difference between an awkward round and a great one.

What makes this version different

Most free imposter games give the Imposter nothing at all, which makes bluffing nearly impossible for new players. This version gives the Imposter a nearby word, so they have enough to work with. The round becomes about subtle differences in clues rather than someone just staying silent and hoping no one notices.

The site also stores your game history and settings on your device using local storage. No account needed. Your past rounds, favorite word categories, and player name lists stay right where you left them.
